Around 44 persons participated. The locations were within 3 hours of the Twin Cities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 1<\/strong>: \u00a0Led by GSM\u2019s Randy Strobel in the Sandstone, MN area. First, we visited a historic sandstone quarry at\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/sandstone.govoffice.com\/index.asp?SEC=EAAE6132-1B65-4E89-8E04-AA3859708563&amp;DE=0D27ABCD-59DE-46CF-BCC8-911286DF3F3C\">Robinson Park<\/a><\/u>\u00a0on the Kettle River. We then drove 5 miles to\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.state.mn.us\/state_parks\/park.html?id=spk00103#homepage\">Banning State Park<\/a><\/u>, where we hiked the Quarry Loop, Hells Gate, and Wolf Creek Falls\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/files.dnr.state.mn.us\/maps\/state_parks\/spk00103.pdf\">trails<\/a><\/u>\u00a0(about 3.5 miles total), where we observed a large historic sandstone quarry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 2<\/strong>: \u00a0Led by\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northland.edu\/dir\/tom-fitz\/\">Tom Fitz<\/a><\/u>\u00a0of Northland College in Ashland, WI, we observed\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.wi.gov\/topic\/parks\/name\/amnicon\/\">Amnicon Falls<\/a><\/u>\u00a0near Lake Superior and the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.wi.gov\/topic\/lands\/WildlifeAreas\/namekagon.html\">Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area<\/a><\/u>\u00a0near Minong, WI. This day featured an examination of evidence of the 1.1-billion-year-old\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Midcontinent_Rift_System\">Midcontinent Rift<\/a><\/u>, subsequent sandstone formation in the Lake Superior basin and then the vast belt of outwash sands left across northwestern Wisconsin by recent glaciation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 3<\/strong>: Led by Lauren Finch at\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crexmeadows.org\/\">Crex Meadows Wildlife Area<\/a><\/u>\u00a0near Grantsburg, WI. This day featured an examination of the human history, disturbance, reclamation and management of that portion of the northwestern Wisconsin sands.<\/p>\n<p>See reports in the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gsmnwp.geosocmn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2019-4-GSM-News-November-2019.pdf\">November 2019 Newsletter<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave Wilhelm<\/strong>\u00a0organized a tour the\u00a0<u><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.safl.umn.edu\/\">St. Anthony Falls Laboratory<\/a><\/strong><\/u>\u00a0and its varied experiments on December 11, 2019. About 7 persons participated.
