Dave will organize future tours of this unique lab and its varied experiments each semester as member interest dictates.\u00a0Look for Deborah Naffziger\u2019s reports of two earlier tours of SAFL in the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/gsmnwp.geosocmn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2017-2-GSM-News-May-2017.pdf\">May, 2017<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/gsmnwp.geosocmn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2018-1-GSM-News-February-2018.pdf\">February, 2018<\/a><\/u>\u00a0Newsletters.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/twincities.illiniclub.org\/\">University of Illinois Twin Cities Alumni Association<\/a><\/u>\u00a0arranged a visit to\u00a0<u><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnastro.org\/facilities\/elo\/\">Eagle Lake Observatory<\/a><\/strong><\/u><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>on Friday, May 4, hosted by the\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnastro.org\/\">Minnesota Astronomical Society<\/a><\/u>. As there was room for additional participants, they generously invited GSM members and friends to join them, which about six did. We listened to a great talk on what can be seen in the night sky this year, including deep-sky objects (star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, etc.), given by amateur astronomer Suresh Sreenivasan, followed by a wonderful evening of viewing through a clear, cool sky. See photos of the GSM 2016 visit to this observatory\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/photos.app.goo.gl\/2XFqMxnBy6yEeAEp9\">here<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>Dave Wilhelm arranged two tours of the\u00a0<u><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stpaul.gov\/departments\/saint-paul-regional-water-services\">St. Paul Water Treatment Plant<\/a><\/strong><\/u>, on\u00a0<strong>Wednesday, May 23 at 1 PM and at 3 PM<\/strong>. Twenty five GSM members and their guests participated. Dave Wilhelm\u2019s photos are\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/photos.app.goo.gl\/XcF6ACgR5hrWJC3P9\">here<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>A field trip to\u00a0<u><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/isro\/index.htm\">Isle Royale National Park<\/a><\/strong><\/u>\u00a0during\u00a0<strong>June 18 through 24, 2018<\/strong>\u00a0was led by\u00a0<strong>Erika Vye, Bill Rose, and Stephen Roblee<\/strong>. These are the same persons who led us on the superb\u00a0<u>Keweenaw\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gsmn.geosocmn.org\/content\/summary-field-trips-2015\">Peninsula<\/a>\u00a0trip<\/u>\u00a0during July, 2015. Seventeen GSM members participated. This trip left on the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/isro\/planyourvisit\/ranger-iii-info.htm\">Ranger III<\/a><\/u>\u00a0from Houghton, MI, spent 3 full days on Isle Royale, returning on the Ranger III on the fifth day. The sixth day was an overview of Keweenaw geology. While on Isle Royale, the Michigan Tech research vessel\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtu.edu\/greatlakes\/fleet\/agassiz\/\">Agassiz<\/a><\/u>\u00a0took participants to many scenic and geologically interesting sites, allowing them to see the beauty and geology of Isle Royale from both land and water. Dave Wilhelm\u2019s report of the 2017 trip is in the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/gsmnwp.geosocmn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2017-3-GSM-News-August-2017.pdf\">August, 2017 GSM Newsletter<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mary Kay Arthur<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Deborah Naffziger<\/strong>\u00a0organized a field trip in the\u00a0<u><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thunderbay.ca\/\">Thunder Bay, Ontario<\/a><\/strong><\/u>\u00a0area during\u00a0<strong>July, 2018<\/strong>, led by members of the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ontario_Geological_Survey\">Ontario Geological Survey<\/a><\/u>. 29 GSM members and guests participated. OGS personnel were very eager to show us the highlights of geology in that area, and there was much to see.\u00a0The organized trip spanned 3 days, from\u00a0<strong>Thursday, July 19 through Saturday July 21<\/strong>. Here were the activities for each day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On\u00a0<strong>July 19<\/strong>, we visited two amethyst mines. 1) In the morning,\u00a0<u><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diamondwillowamethyst.com\/\">Diamond Willow Amethyst Mine<\/a><\/strong><\/u>\u00a0allowed each of us to collect and fill a 2 gallon pail for $20&#8211; $5 off their usual rate. They also had specimens etc. in their shop for sale at various rates. We also received a very nice talk on the history of the mine from its owner. Some of us hauled away large quantities of amethysts, while others were happy with just a piece or two \u2013 prices were prorated by the owners depending on the quantity taken. 2) In the afternoon, we visited\u00a0<u><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amethystmine.com\/\">Panorama Amethyst Mine<\/a><\/strong><\/u>. The owner and his assistants gave us very comprehensive, hands-on tour of their pit and many details of the geology of amethysts. We then collected specimens from material brought up from the mine.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>On\u00a0<strong>July 20<\/strong>, Mark Puumala and other geologists from the\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geologyontario.mndm.gov.on.ca\/index.html\">Ontario Geological Survey<\/a><\/u>\u00a0lead us to debris-site\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Breccia\">breccias<\/a><\/u>\u00a0from the 1850 million-years-ago\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sudbury_Basin\">Sudbury Impact<\/a><\/u>\u00a0event, the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kaministiquia_River\">Kaministiquia River Valley<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and its\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontarioparks.com\/park\/kakabekafalls\">Kakabeka Falls<\/a><\/u>, evidence of the approach and retreat of the Superior Lobe Glaciation, and\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Midcontinent_Rift_System\">Midcontinent Rift<\/a><\/u>\u00a0Formations.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>On\u00a0<strong>July 21<\/strong>, Mark and other geologists from the Ontario Geological Survey lead us east to the formations of\u00a0the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sibley_Peninsula\">Sibley Peninsula<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and its\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ontarioparks.com\/park\/sleepinggiant\">Sleeping Giant Provincial Park<\/a><\/u>.<\/li>\n<li>While not an official part of this trip, many participants also spent a day touring historic\u00a0<u><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fwhp.ca\/\">Fort William<\/a><\/strong><\/u>, which covers the history of the North American fur trade as a living history trading post set in 1816 (with enactors in historically accurate costumes).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A field trip guide for July 20 &amp; 21 is\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/gsmmn.mngeology.net\/sites\/default\/files\/Field%20Trip\/Thunder%20Bay%20FT%20GSM%20July%202018.pdf\">here<\/a><\/u>. Randy plans to reschedule this tour after the Energy Park reopens.<\/strong>\u00a0The tour is free and will last 2 hours. On this tour, we will see the workings of a natural gas fueled combined cycle power plant. This facility is 48 miles (1 hour) south of downtown Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roger Benepe<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Steve\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Willging<\/strong>\u00a0conducted a<strong>\u00a0Fossil Hunting Field Trip\u00a0<\/strong>near Rockford, IA on\u00a0<strong>Saturday, September 29,\u00a0<\/strong>from<strong>\u00a012 noon until 4 PM<\/strong>, attended by 28 participants<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0The location was the\u00a0<strong>Fossil &amp; Prairie Park Preserve<\/strong>\u00a0(a county park with drinking water and nice restrooms) at\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/1227+215th+St,+Rockford,+IA+50468\/@43.0474837,-92.9785559,540m\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x87f050d845a5c631:0xcc9407a1a707080a!8m2!3d43.047247!4d-92.975791?hl=en\">1227 215th Street, Rockford Iowa\u00a0<\/a><\/u>(west of town). Dave Wilhelm\u2019s photos are\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/photos.app.goo.gl\/QCKiYSv91hz2HtHE8\">here<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<strong>Sunday, October 14 at 12 noon<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Steve Erickson,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Kate Clover, and Roger Benepe\u00a0<\/strong>led 32 GSM members and guests on three snowy 90-minute walking tours of the building stones and architecture of downtown\u00a0<strong>St. Paul<\/strong>, using the book\u00a0<u>Rocky Roots<\/u>\u00a0as the primary source.\u00a0 A handout was provided. The tour started in the\u00a0main lobby\u00a0of the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smm.org\/\">Science Museum of Minnesota<\/a><\/u>, then went out to the deck overlooking the Mississippi\u00a0River, to talk about the setting of St. Paul and big-picture geology.\u00a0The tour covered a leisurely\u00a01\u00bd-mile course from the Science Museum to\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stpaul.gov\/facilities\/rice-park\">Rice Park<\/a><\/u>, then along St. Peter and Wabasha streets, including stops at St. Paul Library,\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/landmarkcenter.org\/\">Landmark Center<\/a><\/u>, Hamms Building, Original Coney Island Bar, Assumption Church, Wells Fargo Building, and Ecolab Building, among others. They discussed the geology of the building stones, the architecture of the buildings, and the history of St. Paul and the State of Minnesota.\u00a0 We saw many interesting features found in rocks and discussed how these are formed in geology.\u00a0 Highlights included some spectacular examples of\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnopedia.org\/thing\/morton-gneiss\">Morton Gneiss<\/a><\/u>, cleanly cut and polished.\u00a0 We saw examples of products from the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/miss\/planyourvisit\/brickyards.htm\">Twin Cities Brick Company<\/a><\/u>\u00a0that went into many of the buildings in St. Paul.\u00a0 The old \u201cBrickyard\u201d, now\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/miss\/planyourvisit\/lilydale_park.htm\">Lilydale Regional Park<\/a><\/u>, was the site of several GSM fossil hunting field trips in the past.
