with Dr. Kent Syverson<\/strong><\/p>\n

A powerful glacier almost half a mile thick shaped Chippewa County\u2019s beautiful landscape
where today we hunt, fish, hike, camp and live! This guided coach tour will
include stops that introduce geologic evidence for glaciers, oceans and volcanoes
that once existed right here in Wisconsin. You\u2019ll not only learn about the unique glacial
geology of Chippewa County from an expert in the field, you\u2019ll also learn how a glacial
geologist unravels the geologic history \u201cpuzzle\u201d by observing the landscape, collecting
data, and studying \u201cdirt.\u201d After the first field stops and commentary about the landscape,
you\u2019ll start \u201creading\u201d the land on your own. Likely field stops include: Town of Wheaton,
Bob Lake area, the Chippewa Moraine Ice Age Reserve Visitor\u2019s Center, Plummer Lake
area, Flambeau Ridge, and Otter Lake County Park. Visiting these sites will require participants
to get on and off the coach and to walk short distances to and from the observation
points. There will be no physically demanding terrain or extensive hiking involved. Join us
for this exciting learning opportunity and enjoy the fall foliage along the way!
Dr. Kent Syverson is a UW-Eau Claire professor in the Department of Geology. He has
spent 14 years studying the spectacular glacial geology of Chippewa County. His extensive
Chippewa County research was recently published in the 53-page Pleistocene Geology of
Chippewa County, Wisconsin. Syverson also has published a glacial history overview for
the State of Wisconsin that will be part of the course materials. He serves as Scientific
Advisor to the Chippewa Moraine Ice Age National Scientific Reserve. He currently
teaches Oceanography, Environmental Geology, Geomorphology and Glacial Geology.
\u201cI have a great respect for Kent\u2019s skills as a teacher\u2014he\u2019s enthusiastic and very knowledgeable.
He clearly explains difficult concepts of glacial geology to people who know little
or nothing about the subject. Not only was this a well-planned and well-executed day, it
was the best field trip that I\u2019ve ever been on!\u201d<\/p>\n

campus. The lot is adjacent to the Human Sciences and Services building and
is directly across the street from the Continuing Education office located at
210 Water Street, Eau Claire. Free parking is available. Bring a brown-bag lunch\/
beverages\/snacks, comfortable shoes\/boots for walking and proper clothing in
