Minnesota River Watersheds, South\u00a0Central Minnesota<\/strong><\/p>\n

Date:<\/strong>\u00a0Two day trip, Saturday,\u00a0July 18<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Sunday,\u00a0July 19, 2009<\/strong><\/p>\n

Travel by bus, with significant hiking, canoeing and choice of camping\u00a0or motel. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Day 1<\/strong><\/p>\n

A trip down the Minnesota River (via hwy\u00a0169) brings us to\u00a0Seven\u00a0Mile\u00a0Creek\u00a0County\u00a0Park,\u00a0near St. Peter. \u00a0<\/p>\n

We\u00a0will hike the trails to investigate the glacial and bedrock exposures in the\u00a0ravines\u00a0(2-3 hours).<\/p>\n

River history\u00a0and the current concern over\u00a0turbidity\u00a0impairments in the stream will\u00a0be introduced. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Later in the day we will travel to\u00a0Quarry\u00a0Lake\u00a0Park\u00a0in\u00a0North Mankato\u00a0to brush up on our canoeing\u00a0<\/p>\n

skills in still water.\u00a0\u00a0Motel and camping accommodations are available nearby. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Day 2<\/strong><\/p>\n

We will explore the\u00a0Le Sueur River watershed, south of\u00a0Mankato.\u00a0\u00a0By\u00a0canoeing the Le Sueur from upstream<\/p>\n

of the confluence\u00a0with the Maple to near\u00a0the confluence with the Blue Earth\u00a0(approximately 4 hours with stops)<\/p>\n

we will see over million years worth of \u00a0glacial units exposed in the bluffs as well as the top of the weathered<\/p>\n

bedrock, including some enigmatic units. \u00a0If there is time, we will visit the parts of the watershed that have been\u00a0<\/p>\n

instrumented\u00a0with discharge and sediment samplers including a ravine and river crossing. \u00a0<\/p>\n

This\u00a0plan is subject to revision depending on the stage of the river at the time of our trip. \u00a0<\/p>\n

On the\u00a0drive back along the\u00a0Minnesota River,\u00a0we will discuss\u00a0the Holocene\u00a0history of the valley. \u00a0<\/p>\n

If we have time, there\u00a0are\u00a0some interesting stops on the\u00a0terraces on the\u00a0east side of the valley;<\/p>\n

we can\u00a0consider\u00a0the origin of\u00a0fens; how to tell\u00a0outwash\u00a0from\u00a0River Warren sediment, and why\u00a0<\/p>\n

the river turns at Mankato.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
